Learning the letter sound /s/

We started our day with Jolly Phonics. First we did our letter story. Our kids enjoyed the story by pointing out to every character and objects in the story. Then they loved waving their hand in 's' shape, like a snake and said ssssssss.

The story narration was,

It is a sunny morning, and Sam is taking his dog, Samson, for a walk. They like to walk down to the pond. Sam looks around as they walk along. He sees a toadstool, a red and yellow caterpillar, and a blackbird on her nest. When they get to the pond, they spend some time watching the fish swim around. After a while, Samson goes off and snuffles around in the grass. He finds a stick, which he brings back to Sam. He barks at Sam, and Sam throws the stick for Samson to fetch. Samson runs around, looking for the stick in the grass. Suddenly, Samson starts barking, “Woof, woof, woof!” Sam skips over to see what Samson has found. “ssssss!” In front of Samson is a spotty snake. It is rearing up and is hissing loudly. Sam grabs hold of Samson, and the snake slithers quickly away.

They were even smart to point out to Sam and said "Sam is wearing a sock, Sam is wearing a shoe"

Other things in the picture with a /s/ sound are:

Snake, face, hiss, stick, sun, socks, mouse, stone, snail, spider, spots, grass.

Then  we sang the song from Jolly song,

The snake is in the grass.

The snake is in the grass.

/sss/! /sss/!

The snake is in the grass.

On day 2 we created a story table with the letter sound /s/

The story goes like this,

One day Sammy the giraffe was getting ready to go to the park. It was cold outside so he wore his scarf and he wore his socks. Then arrived his friend sandy the dog. They both took a bus to the park and they enjoyed playing there together.

Then we did blending and segmenting the simple words.

1. s-u-n

2. s-a-nd

3. s-o-ck

4. s-c-ar-f

were they can hear the sound of /s/ in the beginning

5. n-e-s-t

were they can hear the sound of /s/ in the middle

6. m-ou-se

7. b-u-s

were they can hear the sound of /s/ in the end

Finally we ended our day by doing craft. We made Mr. Hiss - the snake and Mr. Skinny Legs - the spider so they can trace over the shape of them in a fun learning way.

Our kids enjoyed making snake and spider with the help of their mothers. They loved singing the song while doing the  craft work.

The snake is in the grass.

The snake is in the grass.

 /sss/! /sss/!

The snake is in the grass.

They also did the tracing of the letter S on the snake and spider.
